Bacardi Wolf Berry and Black Razz

A little birdy whispered into my ear about Bacardi’s plans to unveil their next two flavors. Both to be launched April 1st (I hope I’m not getting punked here!), Bacardi Wolf Berry and Bacardi Black Razz will be the latest flavors to join Bacardi’s now massive selection of flavors. Famous for their flagship Bacardi Superior, Bacardi has continually stretched the imagination of their flavor line.

Unlike other rum brands that focus on locally grown tropical flavors, Bacardi aims at scouring the world for the finest ingredients for their flavors. Bacardi has run with a formula for their past few flavors introducing two fruits in each flavor; one as a primary flavor and the other secondary. Most recently they launched Arctic Grape (white grape/lingonberry) and Rock Coconut (coconut water/rock melon). Other blended flavors include Dragonberry (dragon fruit/strawberry) and Torched Cherry (cherries/torch plant aloe). Don’t know what some of these ingredients are? Prior to googling them, neither do I. This adds to Bacardi’s mystique.

The Goji Berry

Bacardi Wolf Berry includes blueberries and wolfberries (also called goji berries). Wolfberries are an antioxidant, or “superfruit”. They have a mild tangy taste that is slightly sweet and sour. They have a similar shape and chewy texture as raisins. These berries are predominantly grown in China and have been used for thousands of years for health benefits. There is a Chinese marketing myth that a man named Li Qing Yuen lived for 252 years thanks to a steady diet of goji berries eaten daily. These berries are sometimes used in Chinese wines and beers, this is the first known application of it in a spirit. And to this, Bacardi, I salute you!

The Black Sapote

Bacardi Black Razz will be an amped up version of the current Bacardi Razz. I’m unsure the fate of Bacardi Razz, but I must say I am intrigued and delighted to hear of the intentions of this new flavor. Black Razz combines raspberries with the black sapote. The black sapote, also referred to as the chocolate pudding fruit, is in the persimmon family. It looks like a tomato, but when ripened displays an ugly brown color and is extremely soft and custard like inside hence the term “chocolate pudding fruit”). The black sapote does have a slight chocolatey flavor and is extremely high in vitamin C. I cannot wait for the launch of Bacardi Black Razz. This sounds like a terrific flavor for mixing!
